Magic Steps
My Final Year university project, which was developed over 16 weeks. My game was made to answer a question that I set myself, "Can you make a tutorial with minimal text prompts and interruptions". Magic steps is the opening to a 2D MetroidVania, with the player slowly getting upgrades. All art assets were found on Itch.IO and are linked below
Magic Steps is the tutorial section of a 2D Metroid Vania, made to show how tutorials can teach players mechanics without big blocks of text and constant interruptions. The game was made in blueprint entirely by me. I used UE5 with the PaperZD plugin to help with the 2D elements.
I researched multiple games to make this project as intuitive as possible, looking at games like Hollow Knight and Metroid Dread. This game went through multiple stages of playtesting to make sure that players knew what they were doing.
I also made a design document alongside the game to explain my thoughts and level design. It also contains playtesting results and fixes
